How the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Uses Data To Support Caregivers

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation (EDF) is the leading organization supporting the 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers across the United States. EDF equips caregivers with essential tools, resources, and support through their Community Caregiver Map (CCM), a vital part of their Hidden Heroes Campaign. The CCM addresses a pivotal challenge: integrating population-level insights with specific mission metrics to understand military and veterans’ caregivers’ health and wellness comprehensively

Turning insights into action with smarter data

As EDF gathered more direct feedback from caregivers and expanded data sources with RAND studies and internal surveys, it became clear that the platform needed enhanced capabilities to provide precise, targeted insights into each community’s unique challenges. EDF needed to refine its data analysis and integration capabilities to deliver the right services at the right time to the individuals and communities that need them most.

With these challenges in mind, EDF worked with technology company Booz Allen to refine the CCM by integrating real-time data capabilities and more advanced features. The CCM, built on Booz Allen’s EpiMaps platform, leverages data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to pinpoint caregiver locations and uncover key determinants of health factors driving specific outcomes that significantly impact their well-being.

Harnessing real-time data with Salesforce and Tableau

For this project, technologists at Booz Allen revamped the CCM using their EpiMaps platform, leveraging aiSSEMBLE™, a tool developed by Booz Allen to integrate AI for automating and optimizing data insights. By combining these tools with the robust Salesforce Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and data visualization software Tableau, EDF gains real-time access to data through Salesforce Data Cloud. Tableau then transforms the data into visualizations that enable deeper analysis of health outcomes and resource distribution across regions, helping prioritize the most impactful solutions.

EDF’s enhanced Tableau visualizations offer standard features and customizable maps, making accessing essential insights easy. Through data visualization, EDF can effectively utilize resources, perform holistic evaluations of program effectiveness, and enable informed decision-making at the national, state, and regional levels. Users can focus on county-level health outcomes and adjust data to compare health scores between counties. The tool ranks potential solutions by their impact on improving health scores, using prediction algorithms to prioritize actions based on their estimated effectiveness.

Driving measurable impact with AI-enabled insights

By combining Booz Allen’s aiSSEMBLE™ platform with customized data integrations through Salesforce, EDF can now leverage even more dynamic, actionable insights. With the enhanced Community Caregiver Map, EDF now has the ability to:

  • Address individual caregiver needs through tailored data visualizations.
  • Identify gaps in resource allocation based on specific social determinants of health, enabling EDF to channel resources effectively.
  • Equip policymakers with comprehensive, actionable data to create more effective policies to improve outcomes for military and veteran caregivers.
  • Use prediction algorithms to establish priorities and implement targeted strategies.
  • Continuously improve based on live data updates and AI-driven insights.

With comprehensive and up-to-date insights into caregiver capacity, predictions of future needs, and, most importantly, the ability to precisely target action plans, EDF is positioned to improve caregiver support at scale.

A proven, scalable platform for continued impact

Integrating AI and real-time data allows for ongoing improvements in caregiver support strategies. Salesforce’s cloud-based platform ensures that EDF can scale operations and integrate new data sources over time. Flexible API integrations allow EDF to overlay caregiver data, tailoring insights to unique populations and providing insights for the most efficient resource allocation.

This intentional design resulted in an innovative visualization tool that equips EDF to identify, correlate, and compare myriad challenges, unlocking a growing potential for impact. Through this powerful collaboration and technology, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation transforms caregiver support, delivering data-driven solutions that make a difference.
